Prelude Classical Music Awards. Why?

Every year a professional jury (among them some highly regarded Dutch musicologists and journalists) grants the 'Edison Classical Music Awards' of the Dutch Edison Foundation. The ‘Edison’ is an initiative of the NVPI, a Dutch umbrella organization in which producers and distributors of CD's are united. Only a limited number of these members are involved in the production and/or the distribution of classical CD's. The Edison jury makes its selection from the productions the NVPI members came up with themselves. It will be clear that the importance of the affiliated members plays a vital role in the acceptance of the CD's that are due for nomination. It is striking that the crisis that is taking place in the world of the classical CD's is also reflected in the productions that qualify for nomination.

If a record company and/or a distributor is not a member of NVPI, the classical CD's which it is responsible for cannot share in the Edison prize festival. That is why in 2001 Prelude introduced an entirely new Dutch music prize: the Prelude Classical Music Award. The classical CD productions that have been granted a Prelude Award are only published on the Prelude website.
